How to Set a Preferred Domain in Google Webmaster Tools

How to Set a Preferred Domain in Google Webmaster Tools

We had a query earlier this week about verifying a domain with Google. Part of the issue was re-submitting the domain as http://yourdomain.co.za and not as http://www.yourdomain.co.za .

So how do you go about setting a preferred domain with Google Webmaster Tools?

Well, if you see this error message then continue reading:“Part of the process of setting a preferred domain is to verify that you own http://yourdomain.com/. Please verify http://yourdomain.com/”. Although you have already verified your domain, the message appears!

You may not understand what it means like many people. What it means is that you need to verify both the non-www version and www version of your website.

Add your missing domain (“yourdomain.com” or www.yourdomain.com) to Google Webmaster Tools.

You don’t have to re-verify your website in Google Webmaster Tools, when you are prompted to verify your site, select the verification method that you had earlier used for verifying your site and click on “Verify” to continue. Your website would be automatically verified and would be added to your sites in Webmaster Tools.

You can change preferred domain now, just go to Preferred domain from “yourdomain.com” settings and select the option you want and then press save.

Sorted! Happy Googling :-)
